On Friday, September 4, 2020, we received updated guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health related to compassionate caregivers/visitation procedures for limited situations as defined by the Department of Health.

The Department of Health refers to this parameter for visitation as “compassionate caregivers”. The guidance requires the development of a protocol and systematic approach to facilitate these visits for your safety and the safety of our residents and team. One significant piece of the guidance is that “compassionate caregivers” will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within the last 7 days.

We are working to develop the visitation system/protocol and will publish details for utilization as soon as they are available. We look forward to the opportunity to further support our residents and families in this unprecedented time with this new option for visitation and psychosocial support.

Please feel free to contact Jennifer Eslinger, NHA (717-391-3620) with questions or requests to be reviewed.

MH Reverts to Pre-opening Stage

A few weeks ago, nursing homes in PA were permitted to begin lifting restrictions (“reopen”) if they met certain benchmarks. MH met the benchmarks and moved to reopen. Nursing homes are able to remain in a reopen posture as long as they do not have additional positive cases of COVID-19 among staff or residents. Unfortunately, the positive cases in Personal Care means that MH must revert back to its pre-opening stage. Among other things, this means that outdoor visits, meals in dining rooms and beauty salon appointments are cancelled for Personal Care residents. MH Personal Care will move to reopen when circumstances warrant, which cannot occur until September 2, 2020, or later. This action does not affect the lifting of restrictions at WCV.

Website updates will occur as required by government health care guidance, with a weekly summary report on Fridays. You may also call the Mennonite Home Communities Coronavirus Information Line at (717) 984-2900 for similar information.

August 3, 2020

On June 26, 2020 (updated July 20, 2020), the Pennsylvania Department of Health issued guidance for nursing homes to begin lifting restrictions. To safely lift restrictions, nursing homes must:

  • Publish a Reopening Implementation Plan on its website.
  • Have an absence of any COVID-19 outbreak in the facility for 14 consecutive days.

We are pleased to share with you that Mennonite Home met the requirements and began to lift restrictions on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. A copy of our Reopening Implementation Plan is available here (will download as a pdf file).

Although the state is referring to this as a “reopening” plan, there continue to be significant restrictions on residents and family members. These restrictions are based on the latest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other governmental and healthcare agencies intended to keep residents and staff as safe as possible. Please continue to be patient as the various stages of reopening unfold. We are lifting restrictions as quickly as possible with resident safety remaining our highest priority.

There are a few items that are of particular importance and/or interest that we want to highlight:

  1. The reopening guidelines require that if the facility experiences one positive case of COVID-19 among residents or staff, we are required to cease reopening activities and reimpose our previous restrictions. Should this occur, it is likely that the restrictions would be in place for at least 14 days before we could consider entering the reopening phase again.
  2. Visitors continue to be restricted at this time; however, the reopening guidelines permit in person, outdoor visits where a cell phone is not needed to communicate. Please contact us for more information about how to arrange an outdoor visit.

Should you have any questions, please contact Josh Bashore-Steury, Director of Personal Care (717-391-3661) or Jennifer Eslinger, Nursing Home Administrator (717-391-3620).

Gov. Wolf has announced that Lancaster County will move from the Red Phase to the Yellow Phase on Friday, June 5, 2020. At this time, there are no changes at Mennonite Home due to current government guidelines.

However, a Plan to Lift Restrictions at Woodcrest Villa (WCV) has been developed. The changes occurring on June 5, 2020, are being communicated to residents this week.

Some of the key changes for visitors are:

Visitation

Visitation continues to be highly discouraged because our residents are considered a vulnerable population in light of the coronavirus. If you have an essential reason to visit, you may do so beginning Friday, June 5, 2020, under the following conditions:

  1. Regardless of where or what time you are visiting you must check in at the VIVA Centre. There you will have your temperature checked and must answer a series of screening questions. (After hours visitors should contact Campus Security using the communication box located inside the VIVA Centre vestibule.)
  2. You must sanitize your hands and agree to practice physical distancing and wear a face covering throughout your visit.
  3. Once you are eligible, the receptionist will contact your resident and announce your arrival. At that time, you may drive over to your resident’s apartment wing or villa where they will let you in.

Grocery Deliveries

The vehicle checkpoint currently in place will be removed on June 5, 2020. This means you may check in at the VIVA Centre and then deliver the groceries to your resident instead of dropping them off at the checkpoint.

Marketing Activities

Marketing activities are resuming! If you are interested in learning more about the wonderful services, amenities and apartments or villas available at WCV please contact our Marketing Department.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health have issued new guidance for the reporting of COVID-19 data. Specifically, the guidance states that long term care facilities are to:

Inform residents, their representatives, and families of those residing in facilities by 5 p.m. the next calendar day following the occurrence of either a single confirmed infection of COVID-19, or three or more residents or staff with new-onset of respiratory symptoms occurring within 72 hours of each other. This information must—

  1. Not include personally identifiable information;
  2. Include information on mitigating actions implemented to prevent or reduce the risk of transmission, including if normal operations of the facility will be altered; and
  3. Include any cumulative updates for residents, their representatives, and families at least weekly or by 5 p.m. the next calendar day following the subsequent occurrence of either: each time a confirmed infection of COVID-19 is identified, or whenever three or more residents or staff with new onset of respiratory symptoms occur within 72 hours of each other.

We have shared numerous updates on the website, Coronavirus Information Line, resident and family member memorandums, etc., about how MHC has implemented actions to prevent or reduce the risk of transmission (#2 above). We will continue to provide new actions as they occur.

Based on these new guidelines, our weekly report for May 22, 2020 is:

  • Residents at MH Skilled Nursing who tested positive = 0
  • Residents at MH Personal Care who tested positive = 0
  • Residents at WCV who tested positive = 0
  • Staff at MH who tested positive = 0
  • Staff at WCV who tested positive = 0
  • Residents or staff who died after testing positive for COVID-19 = 1 MH Skilled Nursing resident

Also, we did not experience three or more residents or staff with new-onset of respiratory symptoms occurring within 72 hours of each other.

A number of government agencies have recently proposed testing of all nursing home residents and staff for COVID-19. At this time, there continue to be many unanswered questions. MHC will monitor the situation and make a determination at the appropriate time. It is unclear whether the call for universal testing applies to WCV residents or staff.

Visitor restrictions remain in effect at both Mennonite Home and Woodcrest Villa; however, we have provided drop off locations for you to drop off non-perishable items for residents:

  • Mennonite Home – Non-perishable items for residents may be left on the drop off cart located outside the Welcome Center between the hours of 8 am – 4:30 pm. Please clearly label items with the name of the resident and the date you dropped them off. The cart is not monitored. Mennonite Home Communities assumes no responsibility for items left on the cart. Items on the cart will be retrieved a few times each day and placed in a storage area for 24 hours prior to delivery to the resident.
  • Woodcrest Villa – Non-perishable items for residents may be left with the attendant at the checkpoint located at the front entrance off of Harrisburg Pike. Please drop off groceries during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Weekend grocery deliveries may be refused due to lack of available personnel to deliver them to residents.

The four staff have all been self-isolating since they developed symptoms.  No new tests have been sent out today for Skilled Nursing or Personal Care residents. At this time, we have no pending tests in Personal Care and only one pending test in Skilled Nursing.

We are, however, deeply saddened to report that four residents, who we previously reported had tested positive for COVID-19, have passed away at Mennonite Home.  Our hearts and prayers are with the family members of these residents during this difficult time.

We have been and will continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s recommended protocols and control measures.  In addition, we continue to work with and receive support from a coalition of the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and leading nursing home and hospital associations, a public health specialist with the DOH Bureau of Epidemiology, and local and state health departments, and medical experts to manage the spread of exposure.

It is our intention to remain as transparent as possible during this unprecedented situation, while also being careful to protect the privacy of our residents, as we are required to do.  Family members of Mennonite Home residents may direct questions to Jennifer Eslinger, Nursing Home Administrator at (717) 391-3620 or Josh Bashore-Steury, Director of Personal Care at (717) 391-3661.  If your phone call is not answered immediately, please leave a message and we will return your call on a timely basis.

We will continue to update you on this website as we have material information that we can share.  You may also call the Mennonite Home Communities Coronavirus Information Line at (717) 984-2900 for updated information.

We are pleased to report no new cases of COVID-19 among staff or residents in Personal Care or at Woodcrest Villa. Although one additional skilled nursing resident tested positive, we are grateful that in the last two days no new COVID-19 tests have been sent out for either Personal Care or skilled nursing residents.

We are grateful that two of our employees who tested positive have been medically cleared and returned to work. A third employee has been cleared to return to work on Monday. A total of 12 staff have had negative tests. Since our last update we had four staff test positive, two of whom are in non-clinical roles and two are in clinical roles.  As is always the case, staff immediately discontinue work and isolate themselves until test results are received.

We have been following the CDC’s recommended protocols and control measures since first learning of the novel coronavirus.  In addition, this past Tuesday, March 31, 2020, a coalition of the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) and leading nursing home and hospital associations conducted an onsite assessment and validated our infection prevention processes and control measures to limit the spread of exposure within our facility.  On a daily basis, our team has been working closely with our Medical Director who is consulting with experts in infectious disease to confirm that we are doing all that we can.  We continue to consult with a public health specialist with the DOH Bureau of Epidemiology. In addition, we will remain in close contact with our local and state health departments, medical experts, and the CDC, to stay up to date on new information to limit and manage the spread of exposure.  Resident safety remains our top priority.

There have been no new cases of COVID-19 within our Personal Care facility at Mennonite Home.

As you have heard in the news, federal, state, and local authorities are reporting a projected surge of positive COVID-19 cases in the United States over the next two weeks.  Since our last update, despite our team’s incredible and tireless efforts at control and mitigation, we have experienced a surge in new cases with 11 additional residents within our Skilled Nursing facility, two Woodcrest Villa staff members, one Mennonite Home staff member and one WCV resident (who has transferred to Mennonite Home) testing positive for COVID-19.  Staff are isolating at home, while residents were placed in isolation as soon as they presented with symptoms, and remain in isolation per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocols.  In addition to these residents, two Woodcrest Villa staff members and one Mennonite Home staff member have also tested positive for COVID-19.

We know that the news of these additional cases may cause concern and expect there will be family members of residents who will have questions and will want to ensure their loved one is safe, and that their needs are being met.

We have been notified of two additional positive cases of COVID-19 in our Personal Care facility at Mennonite Home. There are no new cases at Woodcrest Villa.

We will implement any instructions provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, in addition to the procedures we are already following as recommended by the CDC to contain any possible spread.

We know this is a disconcerting and frightening time for residents and their families. We are doing everything possible to provide the highest level of care and protection for residents, and we understand how difficult this situation is for residents and their families. Truly, these are unprecedented times.

Our esteem is growing for our staff. We are very proud of our professional, caring team members who are working under very challenging conditions. As you can imagine, our team members have similar concerns about the safety of themselves and their families. Truly they are heroes in all aspects of that term and we appreciate them very much. Please pray for these conscientious team members and their families.

Please be patient with us. We know how important open, transparent communication is; however, we may not be able to return your call as quickly as we may otherwise. Also, we are cognizant of the privacy of our residents and may not be able to share all the information you request.

Numerous measures have been taken at both Mennonite Home and Woodcrest Villa to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The key measures are:

  1. Cancellation of all non-essential visitation at both campuses. All visitors are screened at the entrance and asked to leave if they do not have an essential reason to be on campus.
  2. Residents are strongly urged to remain in their apartments. We have instituted meal delivery, grocery delivery, mail delivery, news delivery and trash pickup so residents do not need to leave their apartments/villas.
  3. Housekeeping services and transportation to the grocery stores has been cancelled. The Marketplace is maintaining regular hours and is stocking additional items residents may need. Grocery delivery services are facilitate by staff if available from local grocery stores.
  4. All staff are screened at start of shift and end of shift for signs of illness and fever. Staff are wearing masks at all times when they are out of their offices.
  5. We have added daily programming to our in house channel to help residents with social isolation.
  6. We are calling residents on a frequent basis to provide wellness checks, see how they are doing, ask if they need anything, and inquire as to their general welfare.

Mennonite Home Communities (MHC) is actively preparing to prevent cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel virus. Because the people we serve are typically more vulnerable to the virus and the disease it causes, COVID-19, we are taking action.

At this time we have no diagnosed cases of residents or staff being infected with coronavirus.

MHC leadership is receiving regular communication from local and state public health officials, including the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Keystone Health Care Coalition, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, as well as with officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The following general measures have been taken:

  • We have emergency preparedness and infection prevention and control plans in place. These provide detailed instructions for staff on how we address and manage infectious disease outbreaks.
  • Our staff is trained in infection control practices and follows established protocols based on that training. We have experience managing illness outbreaks and have a heightened awareness of the possible risk to our residents and staff posed by viral illnesses, such as flu, norovirus, and COVID-19.
  • We have strengthened environmental cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, furniture, etc.
  • We are regularly communicating to residents, family members and staff about the importance of washing hands, covering cough/sneezes with elbow or tissue, etc.

In addition, the following specific measures have been taken:

  • Temperature checks and screening questions are being asked of all MHC staff at both the beginning and end of shifts. Staff who are unable to pass the screening are not permitted to work.
  • Visitation at Mennonite Home is restricted which means all non-essential visitation is cancelled. Essential visits will only be permitted when a resident has a significant issue. In such cases, family members are required to contact us in advance to review the issue and obtain approval before coming to the facility. If you wish to discuss this option, please call Brandi Rager, Director of Social Work at (717) 390-7991.
  • All non-care related activities at Mennonite Home and Woodcrest Villa are cancelled including activities, church services, etc.
  • Guidelines from the CDC include limiting all unnecessary contact to prevent possible exposure to COVID-19. To that end, MH will no longer permit families to drop off laundry, food or personal items for residents, with the exception of medications and incontinence supplies, preferably at least a 30 day supply to limit unnecessary contact. Please contact the Unit Assist on your household or Brandi Rager, Director of Social Work (717-390-7991) if you wish to discuss how this applies to you.
  • All non-essential visitation at Woodrest Villa is cancelled. Residents are no longer able to “buzz in” guests at resident entrances.
  • Dining is also being adjusted to promote social distancing.
